President Donald Trump said he called Google chief executive Sundar Pichai to discuss renaming the Atlantic Ocean, according to the Washington Post.
Pichai turned him down, telling the president: "Please don't ask us to do that."
The request follows a pattern: Trump's administration renamed the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America" in U.S. government usage between October 2025 and October 2026,
The change was reflected by Google Maps within the United States while keeping "Gulf of Mexico" displayed elsewhere internationally.
He also renamed Lake Ontario, a lake shared with Canada, though that change has not gained wider international acceptance.
Speaking at a rally in South Carolina, Trump said he now wanted "a river and an ocean" after renaming a gulf and a lake, floating names including "Trump Ocean" or "American Ocean" for the Atlantic.
Pichai reportedly pushed back on the scale of the ask, noting oceans "cover a lot of countries," unlike the more contained Gulf of Mexico or Lake Ontario.
Trump said he would "probably pass" on pursuing the Atlantic renaming.
Pichai has led Google since 2015 and Alphabet, its parent company, since 2019, overseeing products including Search, Android and the Gemini AI platform used by billions globally worldwide.
