OpenAI has begun letting ChatGPT dot agents communicate through iMessage, SMS and RCS.
Until now, dots only worked inside the main ChatGPT app on mobile, desktop and the web, with Slack and Microsoft Teams also supported.
OpenAI introduced dots on 29 September as persistent agents meant to work toward a user's goals continuously rather than respond to single prompts, built on GPT‑6 Astra with their own dedicated cloud computer.
Access rolled out through October to eligible users on Pro and Business Premium plans, with Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare tiers kept in a beta requiring administrator activation and Pro initially excluded from the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK.
Under the texting feature, a dot can receive tasks, photos or voice notes and text proactive updates back, with setup available from the dot's profile by selecting "Texting".
OpenAI separately offers a ChatGPT desktop integration on Apple-silicon Macs that can read and search iMessage, SMS and RCS conversations and draft or send messages, though users must approve each recipient and message before it goes out.
OpenAI's help material describes texting as running through a third-party provider and remaining a limited beta, meaning availability can vary by country, plan and account.
9to5Mac noted the expansion could, in theory, bring dot access to the Apple Watch and open new voice-based interactions beyond ChatGPT's existing simulated calling feature, though it said this would need testing to confirm.
