X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, now lets users in the United States tap cashtags such as $BTC or $TSLA to bring up a market page directly from their timeline.

Tapping a cashtag opens live charts and a "Trade" button, which sends users out of the app to complete orders on partner sites, keeping the transactions themselves off X.

"Cashtags close the gap between a ticker on the timeline and the market itself," said Mridul Singhai, X's product engineering lead.

The button routes users to partner brokerages and exchanges including Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken and Coinbase, where they can log in or sign up to finish a trade.

X does not execute the orders itself, and is careful to stress that it is not acting as a broker.

The change follows the addition of real-time pricing and charts to cashtags earlier this year, and formalises a referral path linking the platform's market conversations to trading services.

It fits Musk's ambition to turn X into a finance-oriented "town square" while stopping short of the regulation that handling trades directly would bring.

The company says it has roughly 132 million daily active users on mobile and more than 245 million globally.
