Alibaba, the Chinese technology and cloud computing group, has unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) chip, the Zhenwu V900, which it said would be powerful enough to train models with five to 10 trillion parameters.
Parameters are the internal settings a model learns during training, and are a rough guide to its size and capability.
The company said the V900 delivered three times the performance of its previous chip, the Zhenwu M890.
For context, Alibaba's current flagship model, Qwen3.8-Max, contains 2.4 trillion parameters, so the new chip is built to train systems several times larger.
Alibaba said demand for AI computing was rising fast and that it expected to have more than 20 gigawatts of computing capacity by 2032.
"We are mobilising every resource," said chief executive Eddie Wu, describing the push as a response to customer demand.
The company cast the launch as part of a multi-year effort to build a complete AI system spanning its own chips, cloud services and frontier models.
Alibaba's US-listed shares rose more than 2% in overnight trading after the announcement.
The rollout comes days before a state visit to Washington by the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, and against a backdrop of US export restrictions that have curbed China's access to foreign chips and spurred its firms to develop their own.
