Taiwan prosecutors charged nine people, including current or former employees of Nvidia and Super Micro Computer, with aiding the shipment of advanced AI servers to China.
Prosecutors said two defendants made false claims to secure approval for the purchase of 130 AI servers from Super Micro, telling authorities the hardware would remain in Taiwan while the systems were fitted with high-end Nvidia chips, the indictment alleges.
The indictments target the paperwork trail as much as the hardware, accusing suspects of falsifying export declarations and routing servers through third countries to evade controls, prosecutors said.
The case follows a months-long probe that saw raids, detentions and related actions in Taiwan this year as authorities investigated diversion of Super Micro-built systems said to contain Nvidia accelerators.
U.S. export curbs that aim to block China from the most advanced Nvidia chips have framed the investigation, with prosecutors citing the controls as the reason the shipments required special approval.
Taiwanese authorities widened the inquiry through the summer and returned indictments on the matter late in August, a step prosecutors said was intended to hold those who arranged the exports to account.
