President Donald Trump said he will discuss artificial intelligence (AI) with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House, but added that he wants to "leave it exactly where it is".
Xi is in Washington for a three-day state visit, with trade and technology central to the talks and officials expecting AI to feature.
Trump has resisted tighter AI rules even as concerns have grown following the resignation of an Anthropic researcher and a series of security breaches.
He used a speech at the United Nations to reject global coordination on AI.
He said the US "totally rejects any attempt" to build international controls.
"We can have amazing AI and our guardrail is the DOJ!" he wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform.
The post points to an approach that relies on the Department of Justice (DOJ) and law enforcement, rather than new regulation, to police the technology.
Trump also announced an AI Force to screen material produced by the industry for what he called "BAD" content.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said US and Chinese officials are working on a notification mechanism to alert each other to AI threats with national security implications.
