Claude Docs: What Anthropic's move into documents means for Microsoft

The AI firm is turning its chatbot into a workspace, and past launches have rattled software shares.

Anthropic has shifted Claude from answering questions to producing the work itself, putting the assistant in direct competition with the office software that Microsoft and Google sell.

The AI company behind the Claude assistant on 16 September launched Claude Docs, a collaborative editor that drafts sections, comments on editorial choices and revises text inside a chat window.

It also brought Claude Slides and Claude Design, its presentation and visual design tools, into ordinary conversations in beta, letting users build decks, edit single slides and export them as PowerPoint files or PDFs.

The update folds the standard chat, the Cowork project workspace and the design tools into one interface, with Claude deciding which to deploy for a given request.

Documents start private, can be shared with individuals or a whole organisation, and export to Google Docs or Microsoft Word.

A history of rattling software stocks

The significance for investors lies in precedent, because earlier Anthropic releases have knocked software valuations.

When the company rolled out the plug-ins that became Claude Design this year, a range of listed software companies suffered a prolonged share sell-off as investors weighed the competitive threat.

A fight over the main screen

Analysts increasingly frame the contest as a battle over the primary screen through which office workers get things done.

Microsoft and Google are embedding AI into their existing productivity apps, while Anthropic is pulling the productivity work into the AI instead.

Rival OpenAI, the ChatGPT developer, has already merged its Codex coding tool with its chatbot, part of a wider industry push to handle quick queries and complex tasks in one place.

The rivalry is tangled, because Microsoft already runs some Anthropic models inside its Microsoft 365 Copilot software, making the two companies partner and competitor at once.

Enterprise customers account for roughly 80% of Anthropic's business, and the company has been valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars ahead of a planned stock market listing.

Claude Docs, Slides and Design reach paying Pro and Max subscribers first over the coming weeks, before any wider release.

Separately, Anthropic signed its first Australian data centre agreement on the same day, leasing capacity at a roughly $32 billion campus in Queensland to run Claude queries as it scales capacity abroad.
