Arm chief says AI will help cure cancer within our lifetime

Rene Haas told the BBC that today's systems are too complex to model how cancer affects DNA markers, but scale will eventually solve the problem

Arm Holdings chief executive Rene Haas has said artificial intelligence will help find a cure for cancer within our lifetime.

"I believe in our lifetime, AI will help cure cancer," Haas said.

Why the problem is currently unsolved

Haas told the BBC that modelling how DNA markers are affected by cancer is currently "too complex" for both people and today's AI systems.

He said the problem will be solved as models and computing power continue to scale up.

Arm, the Cambridge-based chip designer, noted that clinicians are already using AI tools to speed up diagnoses, including AI-powered X-ray analysis that produces faster lung scans.

Robots within five years, but supply is the constraint

Haas also predicted widespread humanoid robots within five years.

He warned that chip shortages and constrained data centre capacity are slowing that progress.

Arm's stake in the outcome

Arm has been pushing into data centre processors with a chip it calls the Arm AGI CPU.

The company's management has framed its near-term growth around supplying the computing power that AI workloads require.

That positioning means industry-wide supply constraints are not just a talking point for Arm, but a material limit on the ambitions Haas is describing, including in fields such as drug discovery.
