OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a medium-sized model the company positions between its cheapest and most capable offerings, now available through ChatGPT Work, Codex and its API, according to 9to5Mac.
Terra sits in OpenAI's four-tier model lineup, ranked by price and capability as Luna, Terra, Sol and Astra, and last month's rollout of GPT-6 upgraded Sol and Luna while leaving Terra on the older GPT-5.6 generation.
The new version replaces GPT-5.6 Terra and is priced 50% lower, which OpenAI frames as suited to automating everyday computer-based work such as drafting proposals, reading technical drawings, filling out forms and editing video.
OpenAI's internal testing on error-inducing prompts found the error rate at low reasoning effort fell from 53.6% with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7% with GPT-6.1 Terra, and at maximum reasoning effort the rate dropped to 4.3%, which the company says nearly matches the error rates of GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
The update follows OpenAI's broader push to widen distribution of its models: the company has been working to serve customers across multiple cloud providers beyond Microsoft, while keeping Microsoft as its primary cloud partner under a revenue-share arrangement capped through 2030.
