Tesla will bring the Model Y L, a six-passenger, extended-wheelbase version of its bestselling SUV, to the US, with production slated at Gigafactory Texas and a sales rollout planned before the end of 2026.
The L adds roughly six inches to overall length, mostly in the wheelbase, to create usable third-row space and more second-row legroom, addressing the cramped layout of the current seven-seat Model Y while leveraging the Model Y’s outsized demand, which Cox Automotive said accounted for one out of every three EVs sold in the first quarter.
"The YL would solve this problem quite neatly," Edward Loh, Head of Editorial for MotorTrend, said, summarising why Tesla is positioning the L as a replacement for larger three-row models.
The long-wheelbase variant is already on sale in China, Australia and India and began deliveries in Malaysia this month, and AutoForecast Solutions’ Sam Fiorani projected U.S. production to begin in September and sales to start before the end of 2026.
Early reviews cited improvements in versatility, comfort, range and driving dynamics compared with the refreshed Model Y, and Tesla will rely on Texas production to meet U.S. demand rather than importing from China.
