OpenAI's ChatGPT and Roblox may find themselves in the crosshairs of European regulators, according to latest press reports, which claim the two very different, but very popular online destinations could be added to the European Commission's list of "very large online platforms" under the Digital Services Act.
Comments from European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier claim the designation is possible because both services have reported user numbers above the DSA threshold, and described such an inclusion as "definitely possible."
The EU's executive arm could make a formal designation as soon as August, after both services exceeded the DSA's trigger of 45 million monthly users in the bloc.
ChatGPT is OpenAI's large conversational AI service and Roblox is a user‑generated-content gaming platform that hosts a large creator and player ecosystem.
If designated, the platforms would face the DSA's strictest duties, including systemic risk assessments, independent audits and expanded transparency reporting, and would come under closer scrutiny of content moderation and recommendation systems.
A formal designation could arrive as soon as August.
