OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, is developing new agent features to counter Grok Bot, and has discussed building a dedicated assistant to respond to Meta's Muse, according to The Information.
AI agents are software that carries out tasks on a user's behalf, such as booking travel or managing emails, rather than simply answering questions.
The plans follow rival launches, including SpaceX's paid Grok Bot last month and Meta's consumer-focused Muse this month.
Rather than starting from scratch, OpenAI is reportedly adapting agent tools already in ChatGPT and Codex, its coding assistant.
It plans to combine them into persistent "assistant teams" that run routine tasks and manage software workflows in the background.
The move reflects a wider shift in the industry from chat windows towards always-on agents that work across different apps.
It also fits OpenAI's recent rapid pace of model and tool releases, and its push to build assistants into both professional and consumer products.
