OpenAI is merging the Chat and Work tabs in the ChatGPT desktop app, according to emails sent to users.
The change will reach a select group of users first for feedback before any wider rollout, with no release date yet announced.
The desktop app currently splits ChatGPT into separate Chat, Work and Codex sections, each carrying its own tabs and navigation.
This was a structure OpenAI introduced when it launched the unified desktop app globally for macOS and Windows in July.
Quick questions
Chat was built for quick questions, Work for longer tasks such as research, documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and Codex for software development, kept separate throughout.
OpenAI said the merged mode lets users move from discussing an idea to having ChatGPT act on it without switching views, bringing in files or plugins to build a website or presentation while reviewing the output.
"This will enable you to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place," the company said in the email, adding that Codex will stay a distinct experience.
Chat and Work will also draw from the same token allowance pool once combined.
OpenAI said most users should see little disruption, though some may hit usage resets more often depending on their activity and the model used.
A separate report indicates shared allowances for Plus, Pro and Business subscribers were planned from December.
The move follows Anthropic, which merged Claude's chat and Cowork functions into a single screen in September.
