Google DeepMind will be led day-to-day by Koray Kavukcuoglu after Demis Hassabis steps back to assume the roles of Chair of GDM and Chief Scientist of Alphabet.
Sundar Pichai and Demis Hassabis said in messages to employees that Koray, currently GDM chief technology officer and Google’s Chief AI Architect, will report to Pichai and oversee Gemini model development, Frontier AI research and the Gemini app and developer teams, the AI research unit.
“It’s critical that we collectively get the next steps right to ensure this all goes well for humanity,” Demis Hassabis wrote.
Hassabis said he will continue to advise Koray, Josh and the GDM leadership, remain connected to GDM while leading Isomorphic Labs, and work with Sundar on strategic AGI and science matters from the new London Platform 37 offices.
Sundar Pichai highlighted product momentum in his note, saying Gemini models are in high demand among developers and businesses, the Gemini app reached 950M+ monthly users, Gemma models have surpassed 900M+ downloads, Flash is in high demand and the Cyber model is live.
After a 27-year run, Jeff Dean and Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat will launch an independent public benefit corporation to accelerate discoveries in machine learning, science and engineering, with Google as a founding investor and Cloud partner.
