TikTok lost a partial summary judgment in a Texas lawsuit after a judge found the company misled users about its child‑safety features.
The ruling by Judge Cory Liu clears the way for the state’s consumer‑protection claim from a 2025 lawsuit to proceed to trial, The Verge reported.
Texas told the court TikTok publicly promised it would remove videos showing drugs, gambling or graphic injuries but instead marked some of that material hard to find, and that the app’s Restricted Mode did not filter out inappropriate content for minors as advertised.
The suit, filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton after the state’s SCOPE Act took effect, sits inside a broader push by states and families to hold social platforms to account for youth safety and alleged addictive design.
Texas officials said a trial on remedies and penalties is expected to be scheduled next month.
