US lawmakers warned the United States must ensure the next chapter of responsible artificial intelligence innovation is written in America, not in China.

The warnings came at a hearing titled AI and the American Dream: Promoting Innovation, Affordability, and American Dominance, where lawmakers displayed bipartisan support for retaining America’s lead, the South China Morning Post reported.

"The nation that leads in AI will set the terms of the world’s economy and command the high ground in military power," said Senator Jim Banks, a Republican from Indiana.

Tim Scott, chairman of the US Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, told the hearing that cyber security and national security must be taken seriously and that the United States cannot afford to let China or any other adversary gain a technological edge in artificial intelligence.

The coverage added that China and the United States have historically pursued different approaches to AI development.
