The German military is evaluating 30 AI tools to speed battlefield decision-making, and aims to deploy a prototype in the second quarter of 2027 with full implementation expected in 2028.
The move follows the war in Ukraine, which has made battlefield sensing more data‑intensive as drones and satellites produce vast streams of imagery and video that require automated analysis.
Unsurprisingly, most candidates under review are made by German companies, with French firm ChapsVision among a few foreign entrants.

Vice Admiral Thomas Daum, chief of the military’s cyber command, told Handelsblatt, "The exploration is ongoing, and I'm optimistic that we will have a prototype in the second quarter of 2027."
Daum previously said Germany will not buy Palantir’s Maven for now, having ruled out purchasing the Maven even as the U.S. and NATO use Maven to analyse battlefield data; concerns about dependence and data sovereignty have shaped the debate.
The programme builds on a year of Bundeswehr pilots and procurement work that moves some projects from testing toward operational use on NATO’s eastern flank, with initial fielding and wider roll‑out scheduled across 2027-28.
