Coinbase appointed Anthony Armstrong to its board, a move the company says expands its governance bench as it navigates institutional growth and regulatory scrutiny, with the appointment effective September 1.

Armstrong is the former chief financial officer of xAI and previously held senior roles in technology M&A at Morgan Stanley, experience Coinbase can draw on as it markets itself to institutional investors and seeks tighter compliance controls.

Expertise in audit

The San Francisco-based cryptocurrency exchange said the hire increases expertise on its Audit and Compliance Committee and brings a finance-focused director who has recently operated inside Musk-linked ventures, a background that could help guide risk oversight for products tied to fast-moving markets.

Armstrong’s stint at xAI was brief, and his CV includes advisory work for government efficiency programs and a decade advising large technology deals, a mix of public‑ and private‑sector experience Coinbase highlighted when announcing the appointment.

Expanded board

The board expansion moves Coinbase from nine to ten directors and gives the company an additional director with both Wall Street dealmaking and frontier-tech finance experience as it pursues custody and institutional services.

Coinbase did not announce any special related‑party arrangements, and Armstrong’s term runs until the 2027 annual meeting.
