Newlight cuts ship fuel use with hydrogen retrofit

Newlight completed its first long-range commercial voyage using a compressed-hydrogen injection retrofit that cut fuel consumption <cite data-src="1">24%</cite> and CO2 emissions <cite data-src="1">28%</cite>.

Newlight completed a first long-range commercial voyage using a compressed-hydrogen injection retrofit that cut fuel consumption 24% and CO2 emissions 28% on an 8,500-nautical-mile trip from Singapore to Ghana.

The San Francisco Bay Area startup told TechCrunch its system retrofits existing diesel engines, can be installed in less than two weeks without a dry dock, and aims to reduce fuel use and emissions by more than 20% while saving some vessels up to $500,000 a year.

"Seeing the system integrate with the vessel, operate reliably, and deliver the results we had been working toward was a huge milestone for us," Haran Cohen Hillel, Newlight's CEO, said.

Newlight says its controller times compressed-hydrogen injections down to the millisecond level, measuring exhaust temperature, combustion pressure and air intake to adjust flow on each piston stroke.

The company closed a $9 million seed round that included lomarlabs and BIRD Energy, and says it has agreements to fit the system on 12 vessels with broader fleet rollouts planned next year.

The approach leans on retrofits rather than new fuel systems, positioning hydrogen injection as a quicker, lower-disruption path to cuts in fuel and carbon for merchant shipping while Newlight focuses on scaling in the maritime sector.
