Amazon will launch satellite internet services in South Africa using its Leo low-Earth orbit network.
The company will partner with Herotel, South Africa's largest fixed internet service provider, to offer a service named Evry that is slated for commercial launch in 2027.
"This is the first Amazon Leo agreement of this kind in Africa," the company said on its website.
The announcement arrives while SpaceX's Starlink has not secured a licence in South Africa because telecoms firms are required to allocate 30% equity to historically disadvantaged groups under local ownership rules.
SpaceX owner Elon Musk has refused to cede ownership stakes, calling the black empowerment policy "openly racist", and has accused the Pretoria government of discriminating against white people.
Amazon launched its first batch of low-Earth orbit satellites last year and said it now has more than 390 satellites deployed, well behind Starlink's fleet of more than 10,000.
