Tesla decommissioned the Model S and Model X production line at its Fremont factory as the plant installs the first production line for the Optimus humanoid robot.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on social media that the first Optimus production line had been put in place, and Tesla’s VP of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, said the company could see as many as 40 production lines because of the robot’s complex design.

"Big shoes to fill, but I’m confident Optimus will not disappoint," Ashok Elluswamy wrote on X under a sped-up video from Tesla Manufacturing showing the line being decommissioned.

Musk has also said the humanoid robot would enable greater access to "excellent" healthcare by using artificial intelligence to provide for people’s health needs.

Separately, the Model Y was the best-selling vehicle in China in June 2026, selling more than 38,000 units after topping the market in March with more than 39,000 units.

Tesla has unveiled a U.S.-spec Model Y L, priced at $61,990, and said the previously China-exclusive variant is being assessed for a European launch.
