Uber has rolled out OpenAI's ChatGPT Work to more than 30,000 employees globally, expanding a pilot that began with 1,000 employees.
The companies announced the expansion yesterday, marking Uber's first company-wide deployment of an agentic platform built for knowledge work.
The rollout begins seven weeks after Uber said it would cut roughly 3,300 jobs, around 10% of its workforce, as part of a restructuring chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi called a simplifying management layers rather than a reflection of employee performance. Neither company has linked the two moves.
ChatGPT Work operates inside ChatGPT Enterprise and handles multi-step tasks such as research, meeting briefs, presentations and data analysis, connecting with tools including Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack. GPT-6.1 Sol will serve as its default model, which OpenAI says balances performance and cost. Uber's engineering teams will keep using Codex for coding work.
During the pilot, Uber paired 30 AI engineers with teams for two weeks in "AI pods" to identify tasks for automation, producing dashboards and localised training materials. About 80% of early pilot users were non-engineers, according to Uber vice-president of engineering Sumanth Sukumar.
Uber did not disclose the rollout's cost, and OpenAI gave no productivity or financial figures. Uber chief technology officer Praveen Neppalli Naga said the company wants employees to have tools to "innovate, solve problems and help shape our future," adding: "I can't wait to see what our teams build with it."
