Andreessen Horowitz turned its AI bets into an $8 billion bonanza.
The Information reported that the gain came mainly from large paper markups across the firm’s AI-focused holdings after it sharply expanded AI-dedicated capital.
The firm moved aggressively into the AI stack, raising more than $15 billion across five funds in January 2026, including large allocations for growth, AI infrastructure and a “national interests” sleeve, and had earlier built a multibillion-dollar AI infrastructure war chest that it continued to expand.
A concrete example cited in coverage was a16z’s exposure to Databricks, where successive growth rounds and repricing pushed the company’s reported valuation sharply higher between late 2024 and early 2026.
The windfall reflects a deliberate strategy to spread bets across foundation-model labs, developer tools, cloud and data infrastructure and AI-native apps, positioning a16z to capture returns from rising private-market multiples on both models and the systems that run them.
That approach has left the firm competing for lead positions with other major investors as it deploys its enlarged funds to write bigger checks into AI companies.
