Anthropic tests in-house payments that could pressure Stripe

The Claude owner is exploring building its own billing, fraud-detection and payments systems, a move that could shrink the role of Stripe in collecting fees on the AI group's fast-growing revenue.

Anthropic is testing whether to build its own billing, fraud-detection and payments systems, the reporting says.

The change matters because Anthropic is preparing to begin IPO marketing in mid-October and has been discussed as pursuing a $2 trillion listing with major banks like expected to play lead roles.

Job advertisements and internal hiring signals reportedly point to work on proprietary collections, invoicing and treasury tooling rather than simple integrator work with vendors job postings.

Those same reports note Anthropic has previously used Stripe Payments and Stripe Invoicing to handle enterprise collections for Claude, meaning the switch could re-route large usage-based billing flows.

If Anthropic builds and operates its own stack it would keep more payment processing and fraud-detection activity inside the company and potentially reduce the share of transaction volume routed to outside processors reduce reliance on Stripe.

The timing ties the payments strategy to Anthropic’s broader financial and public-markets push as it readies an IPO marketing launch in mid-October.
