SpaceX targets orbital data center launch in late 2027

The company wants to test computing hardware in space by next year, though experts say meaningful commercial capacity remains a 2030s prospect

SpaceX is aiming to launch an orbital data centre in late 2027, according to the company's stated timeline.

The launch would serve as a demonstration mission rather than a commercial deployment.

Industry specialists argue that meaningful commercial-scale capacity in orbit remains a longer-term prospect, with significant volumes more likely in the 2030s.

Evelyn Chow, an analyst tracking the sector, described large-scale orbital computing as "a next decade event".

The engineering problems

Several technical hurdles stand between a demonstration launch and a functioning orbital data centre.

Chief among them is thermal management, since dissipating heat in the vacuum of space is far harder than cooling a data centre on the ground.

Hardware in orbit is also exposed to significantly higher radiation levels, which can degrade components faster than on Earth.

Equipment becomes obsolete quickly in the data centre industry, and replacing or upgrading hardware already in orbit is a far costlier undertaking than swapping a server on the ground.

Moving large volumes of data to and from orbit at speed presents a further obstacle that has yet to be solved at scale.

What would need to change

Rohit Jha, chief executive of the satellite communications firm Transcelestial, has argued that laser-based communication links between satellites are a prerequisite before orbital computing becomes genuinely useful.

He has also suggested that reaching hyperscale, the term used for data centres large enough to serve major cloud computing customers, could require on-board nuclear power.

A parallel race on the ground

SpaceX's orbital ambitions are unfolding alongside a separate, land-based push to expand AI infrastructure.

Persian Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, are accelerating terrestrial data centre construction as demand for computing power grows.

Political resistance at home

The expansion of data centres is also running into domestic opposition in the United States.

Lawmakers and activists spanning a wide political range have begun targeting large data centre projects over their environmental footprint and strain on local power grids.

That friction adds pressure to find alternative locations for future computing capacity, of which orbit is one of the more speculative options under consideration.

The realistic timeline

SpaceX's own milestone remains a single demonstration launch in late 2027.

Experts say that mission will show whether the underlying engineering works, even if commercial-scale orbital computing does not follow until the following decade.
