Google's DeepMind lab is teaming with A24 to develop artificial intelligence (AI) tools aimed at film production and distribution.

The Wall Street Journal reports the investment is around $75 million and says the multiyear, non-exclusive partnership with A24, the film studio, will cover multiple projects without granting Google access to A24's film and television library.

"This ensures the tools of the future are shaped by the creators who use them," Google said in an announcement blog.

Google said the initial focus is on bridging the gap between cutting-edge technology and next-generation entertainment and that the collaboration pairs DeepMind research with A24 filmmakers to develop new workflows and techniques.

The Verge noted the arrangement may draw scrutiny because Google's models are trained on publicly available internet data and other major studios have previously litigated AI companies over alleged copyright violations.

The Wall Street Journal and Google said the deal is non-exclusive and could include A24's roster of artists, citing creators such as YouTube filmmaker and Backrooms director Kane Parsons.

Google and A24 said the partnership will unfold across multiple projects over time.
