Scaleway, the French cloud company, announced plans to build an AI supercomputer in Sweden at its annual AI conference in Paris.

The system will be Europe's first commercial AMD-based AI supercomputer, open to startups, AI companies and businesses across the continent.

It will run on AMD Instinct MI355X chips, which compete with Nvidia's Blackwell line, a rivalry that reflects AMD's broader push to position itself as a full-stack AI infrastructure provider alongside recent deployments tied to sovereign AI projects in Korea and a large-scale GPU commitment with Meta.

Scaleway chose Sweden for its largely low-carbon electricity and developing AI sector, building on its entry into the Swedish market in May through a partnership with telecom operator Tele2 to sell cloud and AI services.

AMD's senior vice president for EMEA, Stephanie Dismore, said Scaleway is expanding AI infrastructure options in Europe through AMD Instinct GPUs and the open ROCm software ecosystem.

Tele2's business-to-business head, Stefan Trampus, said the project signals Sweden's attractiveness for AI infrastructure.

French firm Bull will assemble and maintain the machine, with servers from Giga Computing, networking from HPE, storage from VAST Data and cooling liquid from Motul.

The project extends Scaleway's broader push into sovereign cloud services as it expands its European AI infrastructure footprint beyond its home market.
